Few people in Canterbury, or indeed anywhere in New Zealand, have so long an unbroken connection with the land as the Deans family.

The records contained in this book consist chiefly of letters which passed between members of the family in New Zealand and their relatives in Scotland and cover the period from 1840-1854.
